Building a Safer Home: One Mother’s Path Through Guatemala’s Justice System

Every year, the Women’s Justice Initiative represents approximately 325 women in family law cases related to child support, denial of economic assistance, alimony, and property rights. For many women in rural Guatemala, these complex legal processes add to the daily demands of caring for children. Too often, mothers are denied the financial support they are legally owed, and when they seek help, they encounter an inaccessible justice system.
Aura* is a 37-year-old single mother of six and a survivor of violence. She lives in Patzún, a rural area where, through hard work and perseverance, she has built a safe home for herself and her children.
Four years ago, Aura made the decision to separate from her partner. For too long, their home was filled with fear, violence, and uncertainty. To support her family, Aura takes on any work she can find, cleaning houses, assisting with nursing care, washing clothes, and selling hand-embroidered pieces she creates herself. Aura finds motivation in her children and is determined to give them opportunities she did not have.

Despite her efforts, financial stability still felt out of reach. Last year, with WJI’s support, Aura filed a child support claim, seeking to ensure her husband provides financial support for their children. In April 2026, she received her first court-ordered payment. It was an important step toward financial security for her family and recognition of her children’s rights.
Aura shares that without WJI’s accompaniment, she would not have pursued the case. The complexity of the legal system had left her discouraged in the past. With WJI’s legal guidance, advocacy, and communication, she was able to secure the economic support to which her family is entitled.
Aura’s story reflects the experiences of many mothers who come to WJI seeking justice. In recent years, WJI has expanded its family law services to better support women navigating these cases and ensure they can access the resources they need to care for their families. This Mother’s Day, we celebrate mothers like Aura, who are building brighter futures for their families.
