The Women's Justice Initiative (WJI) is a Guatemala-based non-profit organization dedicated to combating gender inequality and ending violence against indigenous women and girls in rural communities. WJI improves the lives of indigenous Guatemalan women and girls through education, access to legal services and the prevention of gender-based violence.
Position Title:
Development Officer
Job Description:
The Development Officer will be a critical asset to the growing communications and development team and will be a key actor in ensuring WJI reaches our annual philanthropic goals through our ambitious five-year fundraising campaign. The ideal candidate will be mission-driven and excited to work in multicultural settings with a small but expert team that collaborates closely with other departments. The Officer will be critical in defining comprehensive fundraising strategies that build on the unique resources and skill sets of our team to elevate the organization’s philanthropic success, managing relationships directly with our mid-level donor base while proactively identifying new sources of funding, both through individuals and institutions.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Relationship Manager: Cultivate, solicit, and steward partners and donors (individuals and institutional) with a goal of maintaining and elevating their giving through the design and implementation of thoughtful engagement plans
- Prospect Research: Identify new funding opportunities (individual and institutional) and establish appropriate engagement plans
- Strategy: Analyze past fundraising strategies and collaboratively establish new practices and strategies that leverage resources such as communications materials, impact data, event participation, etc. to raise funds. Attend and contribute to weekly team and project-based meetings.
- Database (Salesforce) hygiene and gift processing (Hopsie) maintenance
- Communications:
- Support on editing and drafting content for communications materials to be utilized in donor engagement plans, including but not limited to newsletters, annual reports, impact reports, and stories of impact.
- Grant Reporting: Coordinate with Impact and Learning Officer to ensure timely submission of grant reports and accompanying materials, including editing and revision of reports and compilation and submission of materials.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Assist Director of Communications and Development to manage Board relations, prepare development-related materials for quarterly board meetings and development committee meetings, and take meeting minutes.
- Preparation of philanthropic reporting and reconciliation of funds with finance team
- Streamlining processes regarding reporting and tracking progress to goals
- Implementing best practices around donor stewardship
- Collaborate with Grant Writer to develop successful proposals
- Represent the Communications and Development team at team functions
- Attend events, conferences, forums when appropriate; staff and prepare other team members to attend conferences that may result in fundraising opportunities
Work Experience:
- College degree in areas related to business, non profit management, marketing, or development (significant relevant experience in the field will be considered)
- At least two years experience working in areas related to fundraising, sales, public relations, or marketing. Relevant Internship and volunteer experience will be considered
- Experience working with a nonprofit, in a bilingual role preferred.
Skills and Additional Qualifications:
- Google Drive, Microsoft
- Salesforce, Hopsie, Mailchimp preferred.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal skills for donor engagement, outreach, and written materials
- Interpersonal Skills: Personal engagement with donors, representing the organization at external events, and enthusiasm for working on a multicultural team
- Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively, and to prioritize projects and deliverables.
- Attention to Detail: Ensure accuracy in data entry, carefully edit and review final drafts of public-facing communications materials
- Innovative and Proactive: Creatively looking for ways to engage donors and prospects, taking initiative in your role to meet your goals, ability to work on your own with focus and drive.
- Experience in Marketing a plus.
